Carlos Ortiz Secures First Victory at LIV Golf Houston

HUMBLE, Texas – Carlos Ortiz emerged victorious at the LIV Golf Houston tournament on Sunday, marking his inaugural win on the Saudi-funded league and his second major triumph in the Houston region. The Mexican golfer concluded the event with a stellar 5-under 67, edging out Adrian Meronk by a single stroke at the Golf Club of Houston. Ortiz had previously clinched the 2020 Houston Open at Memorial Park, securing his sole PGA Tour title.

Expressing his delight, Ortiz stated, “I love playing here. Obviously, Texas treats me well. It’s my adopted home state. I’m just happy to get it done again in Houston.” Beginning the day as part of a four-way tie for the lead, the 33-year-old golfer finished with an impressive 15-under 201. Reflecting on his achievement, Ortiz shared, “It means a lot. I’ve been working really hard, as how you’ve said, I’ve come close a couple times.”

Meronk delivered a commendable performance with a score of 68, contributing to Cleeks GC’s victory in the team category. The German athlete recently joined LIV Golf this year. Local resident Patrick Reed also showcased a strong performance, securing a tie for third place at 12 under alongside Spain’s David Puig (69). Sergio Garcia claimed the fifth spot with an 11-under finish after posting a score of 68.

However, the tournament faced a setback when Jon Rahm withdrew from the competition after completing just six holes due to an infected left foot. Rahm’s participation in the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 remains uncertain.
