Gwyndaf Evans, a former rally driver, never expected his son, Elfyn, to follow in his footsteps and become a professional driver. Elfyn has exceeded his father’s expectations by achieving eight World Rally Championship wins and is currently competing as a factory Toyota driver. Growing up in Wales, Elfyn was inevitably drawn to rallying despite Gwyndaf’s attempts to steer him in a different direction.
Elfyn’s earliest memories of rallying involve watching his father compete and being influenced by legendary drivers like Colin McRae. Gwyndaf provided Elfyn with a benchmark to learn from, despite not doing much driving together. Elfyn learned valuable lessons from his father’s work ethic and driving skills, which have contributed to his success in the WRC.
Gwyndaf realized Elfyn’s potential when he witnessed his son’s remarkable driving skills during a test in Finland. Since then, Elfyn has won multiple titles and races, establishing himself as a top contender in the WRC. The strong father-son bond extends to their professional relationship, with Gwyndaf serving as part of Elfyn’s route note crew during WRC events.
Being a route note crew member is a challenging role that requires attention to detail and the ability to provide crucial information without slowing down the driver. Gwyndaf takes pride in supporting his son in this role, despite the intense pressure and long hours involved. He is dedicated to helping Elfyn achieve his goal of becoming a world rally champion and ending Britain’s long wait for a titleholder.
As Elfyn continues to compete at a high level in the WRC, the Evans family’s bond remains strong, both on and off the rally stages. Elfyn’s determination, combined with Gwyndaf’s support and guidance, has propelled him to the forefront of the rallying world. With the championship title within reach, Elfyn is focused on making his mark in the sport and further solidifying the legacy of the Evans family in the world of rallying.
