Sumo Group, a British video game company that owns various developers and publishers, is facing tough times ahead as they announce massive layoffs. The company, which includes studios like Sumo Digital and Secret Mode, is cutting 15% of its workforce in order to deal with upcoming challenges.
The news of the layoffs came shortly after Secret Mode revealed some exciting new games during the Summer Games Fest, including Critter Café, Deathsprint 66, and Still Wakes the Deep. Despite the recent showcase of upcoming titles, Sumo Group made the decision to restructure its operations to ensure the company’s future stability.
This restructuring will affect up to 15% of the company’s employees across multiple offices in the UK, Canada, Poland, Czech Republic, and India. With a workforce of 1,790 people, this could mean that as many as 270 individuals will be impacted by the layoffs.
Sumo Group is well-known for its work on popular games like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Forza Horizon 5. They have also collaborated on projects such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Hogwarts Legacy. Acquired by Tencent in 2021, Sumo Group has been expanding its portfolio with acquisitions of other game development studios.
