Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin on Wednesday compared LR’s constitutional reform proposals aimed at toughening immigration policy to “a migratory frexit”, while inviting right-wing parliamentarians to continue to “debate” its reform.

The Republicans must file two very strong immigration bills by the end of the week. Essential partner of a possible parliamentary compromise on the future text of the government, the party of Eric Ciotti raises the stakes by asking in particular for a reform of the Constitution, which, in migration matters, would allow France to leave the European treaties.

“We have differences of principle on which, no doubt, we must debate. You propose for certain provisions to leave the Geneva Convention, to leave the treaties of the European Union, to leave the Council of Europe , to get out of the ECHR… this migratory frexit is an important question”, declared Mr. Darmanin in the Senate to a question from Senator LR Henri Leroy.

“Obviously we need to be able to discuss the constitutional proposals but admit that here, we are making an ordinary bill,” he added.

“I have undertaken negotiations, discussions with the LR group in the Senate, with the centrists, with all the other groups who obviously wish to, I hope in the fall, discuss this text. Stop talking about it. speak and start to be concrete, as the government has proposed to you”, he launched to the address of the senatorial majority on the right.

LR intends to include in the Constitution “the possibility of derogating from the primacy of treaties and European law (…) when the fundamental interests of the Nation are at stake”, considering that immigration falls into this box. LR also intends to “elevate the principle of assimilation to constitutional rank”.
