He refuses to be “bobbined into yet another lukewarm scenario”. The president of the Les Républicains (LR) party, Eric Ciotti, “solemnly” asked Emmanuel Macron to receive him on the question of immigration, in an interview published on Saturday June 10 in Le Parisien.
“It’s at the Elysée that it will be decided, it’s the President of the Republic who has the keys, and he alone,” said the deputy of the Alpes-Maritimes, recalling however that in the company of the presidents of the LR groups in the Senate, Bruno Retailleau, and in the Assembly, Olivier Marleix, they would respond to the invitation of the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, “out of courtesy”.
The Republicans have tabled two very hard-line immigration bills against a government that hopes for a compromise around its future bill. But “it’s a false outstretched hand, there is no firmness in the handshake”, regretted Eric Ciotti, for whom only the proposal of LR can “solve the problem of immigration in our country” . The party provides in particular for the possibility of derogating from the primacy of the treaties and European law.
Consultations in progress
Questioned in the program “Sunday in politics”, broadcast on France 3, the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne referred the right to the meetings planned by the Head of State on the reform of institutions. She claimed to have “instructed [Minister of the Interior] Gérald Darmanin with [Minister of Labour] Olivier Dussopt to discuss with Eric Ciotti”, as well as with the president of the centrists in the Senate, Hervé Marseille, and with M Marleix, regarding the “ordinary bill” presented by LR. “Furthermore, she noted, there are constitutional matters that are being raised by LR.” “The President of the Republic has planned to receive all the political forces. When the time comes, the Republicans will also be able to present their constitutional proposals in general and in particular on this subject,” she added.
“The president of the Republicans asks to be received by the president of the Republic to discuss, it is legitimate”, on the other hand reacted the president of the MoDem, François Bayrou, Sunday, on Europe 1-Les Echos-CNews. But, according to Mr. Bayrou, “[derogating from the primacy of the treaties and European law] will not happen, because, without that, the others will come out of the European treaties to our detriment”.
However, the LR proposals are “not demagoguery”, considers Emmanuel Macron’s ally. “Republicans, socialists are trying hard to find a way,” he said.
