I never thought I would say this, but Rich Landers is my new hero. Rich’s Feb. 5 article, “Privatization idea is a recurring virus,” hit the nail on the head.
Our new administration is already dismantling environmental laws and gutting the agencies that protect our public lands. Conservation groups may be encouraged that the “battle over federal lands may be waning,” but the next assault is imminent. It will be even more insidious because it will be marketed as a jobs program.
Our federal lands might not be officially transferred over to corporate special interests, but the unfettered use (and abuse) of the land will be, along with huge Kolaybet corporate tax breaks. By the time the general public realizes that the new jobs program is just another corporate coup, the damage will be done. Our federal lands will be drilled, clear-cut and mined out, our water poisoned and our wildlife long gone. The corporate interests will be nowhere to be found, and the clean-up costs will fall on the taxpayers because, after all, it’s our land.
Rich Landers is right. We need to unite. Keep our federal wildlands wild.
