According to Ukrainian sources, a newborn was killed in a Russian attack in the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhia. The two-storey building of the maternity ward of the local hospital was destroyed by a rocket in the city of Vilniansk during the night, the authorities said.
Inside the building were a woman with her newborn and a doctor, it said. The baby was killed in the attack, but the woman and doctor were rescued from the rubble. A video released by authorities shows rescue workers attempting to extricate a man buried under rubble.
“Pain floods our hearts – an infant who was just born was killed,” Zaporizhia’s military governor Olexandr Starukh wrote on Telegram. The small town of Vilniansk is located in the north of the Zaporizhia region, the southern part of which is largely occupied by Russian troops and which Moscow has declared annexed.
After the incident, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of bringing “terror and murder” to Ukraine. “The enemy has once again decided to use terror and murder to achieve what it has been unable and will not achieve for nine months,” Zelenskyy said. The enemy “will be held accountable for all the evil he has brought upon our country,” he added.
There were also rocket attacks in the neighboring regions of Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk during the night. In Donetsk, where Russian troops have been attacking more and more for weeks, Ukrainian authorities said one person was killed and eight injured. There were no casualties in the Dnipropetrovsk region. However, more than 30 projectiles hit towns, said military governor Valentyn Resnichenko.
Since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began nine months ago, the United Nations (UN) has registered more than 6,500 civilian deaths, including more than 400 children. However, the actual number of civilians killed is significantly higher, according to both the UN and Kiev estimates.
