Smart, known for its small city cars, is taking a bold step into the SUV market with the upcoming Smart #5. Recently leaked images from the Chinese Ministry of Information Technology give us a glimpse of the brand’s third new model, which was initially showcased as a concept car at the Beijing motor show.
While the leaked images don’t provide a clear sense of scale, documents indicate that the Smart #5 will measure 4,705mm long, making it longer than the Skoda Enyaq and just slightly shorter than a Tesla Model Y. This suggests that the new Smart SUV will offer ample interior space, thanks to its 2,900mm wheelbase and large battery pack.
Smart plans to offer a range of powertrains for the #5, including single and dual-motor options. The flagship model is expected to deliver a combined power output of up to 637bhp, promising impressive performance. Additionally, the SUV will feature an 800-volt hardware and a battery pack of over 100kWh, offering a range of more than 341 miles and fast charging capabilities.
Visually, the Smart #5 departs from the brand’s traditional design language, featuring a more upright stance with SUV-style elements. The rear overhang is notably short, potentially maximizing rear legroom. While the interior details are yet to be revealed, it is expected to incorporate cutting-edge technology showcased in the Smart #5 Concept.
Production of the Smart #5 is progressing rapidly, with a potential global debut later this year. The SUV is likely to compete with mid-size electric SUVs like the Skoda Enyaq, VW ID.4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Mercedes EQB in terms of rivals and pricing.
