N.J. PTA has thousands stolen by its president, again

FLEMINGTON – A Union Township woman has been indicted by a grand jury for stealing thousands from the school’s Parent Teacher Association, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III said on Friday.

This is the second time in two years that a head of the township’s PTA has been charged with stealing thousands from the organization.

Robin Patton, 45, of Union Township, was arrested by State Police on Nov. 13 “after an investigation revealed she committed forgery and theft by removing $18,200 from a Union Township PTA bank account,” Keans said. “Anyone that violates the public trust must be held accountable.”

She was serving as president of the organization when the money was taken, he said. Patton is no longer listed in any leadership capacity on the school PTA’s website.

She was indicted on Thursday by a grand jury on charges of third-degree forgery, uttering a forged document and theft by deception. An arraignment date will be scheduled, Kearns said.

PTA leader named Hunterdon fugitive turns herself in

Crystal L. Bernat in May of 2016 plead guilty to one count of third-degree theft for stealing $19,250 from the organization.

Bernat, who was president of the PTA at the time the money was stolen in 2015, had been sentenced to five years of probation. She later was named as a fugitive of the week by the prosecutor’s office when she violated the terms of her probation.

Bernat turned herself in a short time after being named a fugitive.
