PM Shehbaz Sharif to Address UN General Assembly Session

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is gearing up to represent Pakistan at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York from September 23-27, 2024. Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, as well as other senior government officials, PM Shehbaz aims to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and advocate for the UN’s role in promoting global peace, security, and prosperity.

During his address at the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will touch upon various crucial issues, including the long-standing matters on the UN Security Council’s agenda such as the question of Palestine and Indian-held Kashmir. His participation in the UNGA session will provide an opportunity to present Pakistan’s policy perspective on global issues and reiterate the country’s dedication to the principles of the UN Charter and international peace and security.

High-Level Meetings and Bilateral Engagements

In addition to his address at the General Assembly, PM Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to attend several high-level meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA session. These meetings include discussions on the existential threats posed by sea-level rise and the UN Security Council’s open debate on leadership for peace. Moreover, the prime minister will engage in bilateral meetings with world leaders, as well as hold discussions with the UN secretary-general, the president of the UNGA, and members of the Pakistani diaspora.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar will also partake in various high-level events and bilateral meetings with his counterparts during the UNGA session. FM Dar’s agenda includes participation in the Summit of the Future convened by the UN Secretary-General, as well as ministerial meetings with organizations such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the G77 and China. He will also attend the OIC contact group meeting on Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing Pakistan’s stance on the issue.
