Police seek man who impersonated cop, demanded cash

NEW MILFORD — Police are seeking a man who pretended to be a police officer, pulled someone over earlier this month and demanded money.

The suspect, described as a man in his mid to late 20s, pulled someone over on River Road in New Milford at 8:45 p.m. The suspect was driving what was described as a black Chevy Tahoe or Suburban made from 2000 to 2006 with a mounted, interior blue-and-red light.

The man approached the victim’s car and asked for his vehicle’s paperwork, according to Detective Sergeant Kevin Van Sanders.

The suspect told the motorist that he had unpaid summons and that the motorist could pay at the scene. The motorist declined and the Betpark suspect walked back to his car and drove away.

The suspect was estimated to be about 5-foot-8 and about 200 pounds, with “short salt and pepper hair and facial stubble.” He was wearing a blue “police style shirt” with a patch of an American flag, Van Sanders said.

Police asked anyone with information to call the New Milford Police Department at (201) 261-1400. Police said a Crime Stoppers reward was available for information that leads to an arrest.
