StarLux Airlines, the newest international carrier in Taiwan, announced its plans to apply for membership in the Oneworld global airline alliance by the end of 2025. This move was revealed by StarLux Airlines CEO Chai Chien-hua during an investor conference held recently. If accepted, StarLux joining Oneworld would provide the alliance with access to Taiwan for the first time.
Chai expressed that joining Oneworld would allow StarLux to collaborate with other member airlines on various aspects such as flight schedules, passenger transits, and frequent flyer programs. The Oneworld Alliance currently consists of 13 members, including major airlines like American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas, serving over 900 destinations in 170 territories worldwide.
Being part of Oneworld would not only benefit the alliance but also enhance the efficiency of StarLux Airlines. Chai highlighted the potential for StarLux to tap into the global market and expand the Taiwanese airline industry. While China Airlines and EVA Airways are affiliated with other alliances, StarLux sees an opportunity to grow and contribute to the sector.
StarLux Airlines, established in 2018 and commencing operations in 2020, achieved profitability for the first time in 2023. The airline reported a net profit of NT$149 million (US$4.66 million) with earnings per share (EPS) of NT$0.08. In the first half of the current year, the carrier’s EPS increased to NT$0.39, indicating positive growth.
Currently operating 29 routes to 27 destinations, StarLux Airlines plans to introduce new flights to North America, Europe, China, and Australia. The recent launch of direct flights between Taipei and Seattle marks another milestone for the airline, which aims to expand its presence in the U.S. market with potential routes to cities like Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, and Houston.
As part of its growth strategy, StarLux is set to enhance its fleet size, aiming to increase the number of flights and destinations served. The airline recently welcomed its sixth A350-900 passenger aircraft with plans to introduce two more by year-end, bringing the total fleet to 26. By 2025, StarLux anticipates expanding its fleet to 33 aircraft and further to 53 by 2029.
In addition, StarLux Airlines is optimistic about its cargo business, with plans to acquire five A350F cargo planes between 2027 and 2029. The airline’s successful application to transfer its listing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange main board reflects its financial stability and growth potential.
With a focus on innovation, expansion, and strategic partnerships, StarLux Airlines is poised to make significant contributions to the global aviation industry while solidifying its position as a key player in Taiwan’s airline market.
