Six months after the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Washington pledged further support to the government in Kyiv. The new aid package is worth three billion dollars and, according to the information, can be used for weapons and training.
The US government has promised Ukraine billions more in aid to defend against the Russian war of aggression. US President Joe Biden announced in Washington support for Kyiv in the amount of almost three billion dollars. “This will allow Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery systems and ammunition, unmanned air defense systems and radars in order to be able to defend itself in the long term,” Biden said.
Russia had started the war against its neighbor six months ago to the day. Today, Ukraine is also celebrating the 31st anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union. Biden congratulated Ukraine on this anniversary. This shows “that Ukraine is proud to be a sovereign and independent nation – and will remain so”. The United States is determined to support the Ukrainian people in their struggle to defend their sovereignty.
In recent months, the Americans have already launched various aid packages for Ukraine on a large scale and in quick succession. Just last Friday, the US government announced that it would provide Kyiv with additional military aid of around 775 million US dollars. This brought US military support to Ukraine to a total of $10.6 billion since Biden began his tenure. Most of the aid has been flowing since the beginning of the war at the end of February.
So far, the focus of American support has primarily been on delivering arms and ammunition to the front in Ukraine as quickly as possible. Previous arms deliveries from the United States include numerous heavy weapons, such as howitzers and multiple rocket launchers. With the new commitment, Biden now emphasized the focus on a long-term strengthening of the Ukrainian military.
The US has plunked down massive sums of money in support of Ukraine. In May, the US Congress approved nearly $40 billion in funding for this purpose. About half of the total amount went to the defense sector. Billions more were budgeted to, among other things, replenish US stockpiles of military equipment sent to Ukraine. Other appropriations were earmarked, inter alia, for humanitarian aid to refugees from Ukraine.
