Great Britain has announced their five-rider squad for the 2024 FIM Speedway of Nations competition, which will be held in Manchester from July 9-13. The squad includes all four of the 2021 world championship-winning heroes – Robert Lambert, Dan Bewley, Tom Brennan, and Tai Woffinden. The competition, which features 15 countries, replaces the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup and is a pairs-style event that tests team riding skills.
As the host nation, Great Britain is automatically seeded through to the Final on July 13. The squad includes FIM SON gold medallist Tom Brennan, British champion Adam Ellis, and top SGP stars Robert Lambert, Dan Bewley, and Tai Woffinden. They will be competing against 14 other countries in the Semi-Finals to secure a spot in the Final.
In Semi-Final 1, Poland will be facing off against Sweden, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, and Ukraine. The Polish squad features top Speedway GP riders like Bartosz Zmarzlik and Dominik Kubera. Sweden’s team is led by Fredrik Lindgren, while Finland is captained by Jesse Mustonen. Germany’s challenge will be spearheaded by Kai Huckenbeck, and France’s team will be led by David Bellego.
In Semi-Final 2, Australia will be competing against Denmark, Czech Republic, Latvia, USA, Slovenia, and Norway. The Australian squad includes riders like Jack Holder and Max Fricke. Denmark’s team is led by Mikkel Michelsen, while Latvia’s challenge is captained by Andzejs Lebedevs. The USA’s team is led by Luke Becker, and Norway will be spearheaded by Mathias Pollestad.
The top two nations from each Semi-Final will automatically qualify for the Final, while the third and fourth-placed countries will compete in a Final Qualifier for one last spot in the Saturday showdown. Each national team can name up to five riders, with only two starting riders and one reserve allowed per team.
Additionally, the FIM Speedway of Nations – SON2 event will take place on Friday, July 12, featuring eight countries competing for the under-21 world championship title. Hosts Great Britain and reigning champions Poland have named strong squads for the competition, which promises to be an exciting showcase of young talent in the sport.
