The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg create 13 great chances in the Champions League, they don’t allow a single one – and still don’t win the Champions League against Slavia Prague. The strange zero number shouldn’t have any consequences, but it annoys everyone.
The women’s soccer team at VfL Wolfsburg missed out on their early group victory in the Champions League. Despite numerous good chances against Slavia Prague, the German champions only managed a goalless draw. One game day before the end of the preliminary round, VfL is one point ahead of AS Roma. Especially in the first half, the Wolfsburg women had numerous good opportunities, but could not convert any of them. After the change of sides, VfL continued to attack, but the bulwark of the Czechs could not be broken that evening – despite a chance ratio of 13:0 after 90 minutes.
“We didn’t manage to get more than 30 shots on goal. That annoys me and our whole group because there’s nothing worse than not winning games,” said Wolfsburg coach Tommy Stroot. “We then have to prepare things a bit better – get even more out of the second balls around the sixteen and then push the ball over the line.” Wolfsburg had already made it clear that they would reach the quarter-finals a week ago. On the last matchday, the Lower Saxony have to play against the Austrian representative St. Pölten on Thursday.
The FC Bayern women are also in the quarter-finals. The Munich team won 4-0 (1-0) at bottom side FC Rosengard on Thursday and thus qualified for the knockout round on the penultimate group match day. The advantage of the German runners-up on Benfica Lisbon, who lost to the group leaders Barcelona, ??is an unassailable six points.
Bayern’s Brazilian defender Tainara (38th) had headed the team from the Isar into the lead. Sydney Lohmann (66′), Georgia Stanway (73′) and Julia Landenberger (90′) followed up in a one-sided game after the break. “I’m really proud of what the girls have shown so far in the first half of the season,” praised coach Alexander Straus. His team lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season and before that to Chelsea in the semi-finals. Bayern have never won the title.
