Scottish Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, has decided to take a break from campaigning in the General Election to show his support for Scotland’s national team at the Euros. He will be flying to Germany to attend the opening match against the host nation, Germany, on June 14. Swinney expressed his excitement about cheering on the Scotland boys alongside the Tartan Army in Munich.
Joining Swinney in Germany will be the SNP’s leader at Westminster, Stephen Flynn. Although Flynn had to cancel plans to watch all three group matches due to the General Election, he made it clear that his loyalty lies with Scotland and he will not be supporting England when they are not playing. Flynn emphasized that he wants to see Scotland succeed in the Euros as much as possible.
On the other hand, Labour leader Anas Sarwar had to cancel his plans to support Scotland at the Euros as well. Sarwar explained that he will be focusing on campaigning instead of being a spectator in the tournament. When asked if he would be supporting England in the Euros, Sarwar mentioned that it would not be a bad thing if the neighboring team does well.
It is worth noting that Rishi Sunak has called for a General Election on July 4, just one day before the Euro quarter-finals are scheduled to begin. With England being the favorites to win the tournament, some speculations suggest that Sunak might be hoping for a boost in the polls due to the expected success of the English football team. The intersection of politics and football in this scenario adds an interesting dynamic to the upcoming events.
