Millwall and Montenegro goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has tragically passed away at the young age of 26, as announced by the club. It has been reported that Sarkic fell ill at an apartment in Budva, Montenegro on Saturday morning.
Sarkic, who was originally from Grimsby, began his football career in Anderlecht’s academy before moving to Aston Villa in 2015. Throughout his career, he had loan spells at Wigan, Stratford, Havant and Waterlooville, Livingston, Shrewsbury, Birmingham, and Stoke before joining Wolves in 2020. Last August, he made the move to Millwall where he made 33 appearances.
The Montenegro goalkeeper made his international debut against Belarus in 2019 and was on duty last week for a friendly against Belgium. The Montenegro FA released a statement expressing their shock and sadness at Sarkic’s sudden passing, describing him as a beloved member of the national team.
The Football Association of Montenegro extended their condolences to the Sarkic family, highlighting Matija’s positive impact on both the national team and his club, Millwall. The FA also expressed their deep sadness over the loss of the talented goalkeeper.
