Preview: Oregon State’s last chance at a road victory is a must-win for its opponent.
Cal is trying to reach the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row and sits on the bubble after losing three games in a row to Arizona, Stanford and Oregon. Against UO, the Golden Bears lost a 16-point lead and fell on a Dillon Brooks buzzer-beater.
On Wednesday, Oregon State was unable to build on its first win of the calendar year, falling to Stanford 79-66 after beating Utah to end its 14-game Pac-12 losing streak. Twenty-one turnovers doomed the Beavers, as that tally tied their third-highest single-game total of the season. Six players had three or more.
Stanford pushed the ball in transition off those turnovers and shot a season-high 57.1 percent from the field. Cal play less up-tempo than the Cardinal and does not force turnovers at nearly the same rate, yet owns one of the nation’s most efficient defenses.
Cal senior guard Jabari Bird is averaging 20.7 points during the three-game skid, shooting 51.9 percent from three-point range.
For OSU on Wednesday, sophomore big men Drew Eubanks (21) and Gligorije Rakocevic (16) combined for 37 of their team’s 66 points on 12 of 18 shooting, while the starting backcourt of Stephen Thompson Jr., JaQuori McLaughlin and Kendal Manuel went 8 of 25 from the field.
