Paignton Officials Excel at the Prestigious South Coast Rowing Championships

The 2024 South Coast Rowing Championships held on Southampton Water showcased some of the most exhilarating racing in recent memory. Hosted at the Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley, Southampton, this event brought together 194 entries from clubs across three member Associations: Hants & Dorset ARA, Coast ARA (Kent and Sussex), and the West of England ARA (Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset). The Championship events featured top rowers from each Association, competing for prestigious titles.

The regatta kicked off with ideal conditions on the 1800-meter course, but as the day progressed and the tide changed, the water became more challenging. However, this did not deter the rowers, who showcased their skills in the face of roughening waters. The organizers adjusted the course length to 900 meters for the Junior events, ensuring a fair and competitive environment for all participants.

One of the most highly anticipated events of the Championships was the Men’s Senior coxed fours, where crews vied for the coveted Bideford Bowl. The race came down to a nail-biting finish, with Deal narrowly edging out Lymington and Southampton Coalporters. The fierce competition and sportsmanship displayed by the teams added to the excitement of the day.

While the two Torbay clubs were not represented in the competition, Paignton made its mark with two officials, Jane Perry and Shelly Atkins, who took on major umpiring roles and served as mid-course umpires on the water. Their dedication and expertise contributed to the smooth running of the event, ensuring fair play and adherence to the rules.

The awards ceremony was a moment of triumph for the winners, with medals and trophies presented by Matt Aldridge, a former rower with Christchurch Rowing Club who went on to represent the GB rowing squad. Aldridge’s success at the Paris Olympics, where he won a Bronze medal with the Men’s four, inspired the next generation of rowers and added prestige to the event.
