Slovenia’s Euro 2024 Squad: Ilicic Included in Final Selection
Josip Ilicic, a 36-year-old player, has made it to Slovenia’s final 26-man squad for the European Championship. He had been struggling with mental health issues and had not played for his country since November 2021. After his contract with Atalanta was terminated, he returned home to play in the Slovenian league in October 2022. Last season, he showed excellent form with eight goals and 11 assists in 31 league appearances for Maribor.
Despite initially being called up to the preliminary squad, Ilicic made a strong comeback by coming off the bench to score the winning goal in Slovenia’s 2-1 victory against Armenia on Tuesday. Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, who was Slovenia’s top scorer in the qualification rounds with five goals, has also secured a spot in the squad. Additionally, 31-year-old Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid will be the goalkeeper for the team.
In their final warm-up match, Slovenia drew 1-1 against Bulgaria. The team is placed in Group C for the Euros and will be facing tough opponents like Denmark, Serbia, and England. The full squad includes talented players like Petar Stojanovic, Jaka Bijol, Miha Blazic, and many more in different positions.
This selection of players gives Slovenia a strong and diverse lineup to compete in the upcoming European Championship. The team will be looking to make an impact and surprise everyone with their performance on the big stage. With experienced players like Ilicic and Oblak leading the team, Slovenia is definitely a squad to watch out for in the tournament.
