With four airports serving the area, there is ample infrastructure to accommodate the influx of visitors expected during the Olympics. Additionally, the availability of land for new construction projects and the iconic Taj Mahal as a central theme could further bolster India’s bid.
In the past, successful Olympic bids have highlighted prominent landmarks to showcase the host country’s unique identity. For India, leveraging the Taj Mahal’s global appeal could set it apart from other contenders. With good connectivity between Delhi-NCR and Agra, the region is well-equipped to handle the logistical challenges associated with hosting such a large-scale event.
While the final decision on the host city is still pending and will likely be made after the election of the next IOC president in March, India’s commitment to hosting the Games has received public support from the current IOC chief, Thomas Bach. The bidding process will involve a thorough evaluation of each country’s infrastructure, financial stability, and ability to deliver a sustainable Olympic Games in line with the IOC’s guidelines.
India’s interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai in 2023. Since then, efforts to promote India’s bid have been ongoing, with IOA officials and Nita Ambani actively engaging in discussions with the IOC. The country’s rich cultural heritage, combined with its growing infrastructure and commitment to hosting a successful event, could make it a strong contender for the 2036 Olympics.
