It’s the highest-scoring NHL game of the season: The spectators get their money’s worth when the Seattle Kraken beat the Los Angeles Kings 9:8. Only 20 times in the long history of North American professional ice hockey has there been a game with more goals.

With the 17th goal of the game, the Seattle Kraken extended their strong series to six NHL victories and set a season best with the 9: 8 after overtime against the Los Angeles Kings. There has not been a game with more goals this season, nor has a team scored more than eight times in a game before. The six equalizers from both teams combined also equaled the NHL record, the league said. In the meantime it was 1: 1, 2: 2, 3: 3, 4: 4, 5: 5 and 8: 8 in Los Angeles.

After just two thirds, the Kraken were 8-6, and the NHL record of 21 goals in a game seemed within reach. Ice hockey national goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer didn’t have to worry about a flood of goals conceded. After recovering from injury and making his comeback against the Vegas Golden Knights on November 25, the man from Rosenheim did not play, as he did in the win against the Anaheim Ducks at the weekend. “I don’t know what to say. I’ve never seen a game like this either,” he said afterwards.

Only 20 times has there been a game with more goals in North American professional ice hockey, most recently when the San Jose Sharks played the Pittsburgh Penguins 10-8 in the 1995/1996 season. The Kraken are currently the team with the best form in the league, the success against the direct competitor from the Pacific Division was particularly valuable in the fight for the playoffs. “Of course it’s important that we took the points. There are games like this where everything falls into place,” said Grubauer. The Kraken are only playing their second NHL season and have never made the playoffs.

The Boston Bruins, meanwhile, extended their starting record to 13 home wins – that’s the longest time no team has gone undefeated at home at the start of an NHL season. The Bruins won 3-1 over the Tampa Bay Lightning, in which Steven Stamkos scored the only goal and thus recorded his 999th scoring point in the NHL. The San Jose Sharks beat the Montréal Canadiens 4-0 without Nico Sturm, who was still injured.
