Spanish police and customs announced on Friday the seizure of nearly 9.5 tonnes of cocaine from Ecuador, presented as the largest in the country’s history.
The seizure took place on Wednesday in the port of Algeciras (south) and constitutes “the largest concealed shipment of cocaine in Spain to date”: 9,436 kilos which had been concealed in crates of bananas in a refrigerated container, authorities said.
This operation constitutes “an unprecedented blow to one of the most important criminal organizations, at the world level, in the distribution of cocaine whose recipients were the main criminal networks in Europe”, indicates the press release, without identifying this organization.
The logos of more than 30 European criminal organizations, recipients of the shipment, were detected in this shipment.
The organization in charge of this transport could send 40 containers per month to Europe and “had an extensive commercial network for the shipment of containers from Ecuador to Spain”, also using the port of Vigo, in the north. -western Spain.
Police reported no arrests during the operation.
