Gütersloh (dpa/sn) – Students in Saxony can study more and more courses part-time. This is the result of a study by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE), which was published in Gütersloh on Thursday. According to this, universities and colleges in the Free State offer 364 offers also or exclusively on a part-time basis. This corresponds to a share of 35.6 percent in 2022. Two years earlier, the share was still 34.5 percent.
Compared to the other sixteen federal states, Saxony is in fifth place – i.e. in the upper middle field. In comparison, the proportion of part-time courses offered at Saxon universities is significantly higher at 40.1 percent than at universities (15.4 percent). Students in the subject groups of art, music, design as well as linguistics and cultural studies have the greatest range. Here the part-time rate this year was over 56 percent.
The proportion of degree programs that are also or exclusively offered part-time has also increased throughout Germany. While the proportion of part-time offers nationwide was 16.1 percent in 2020, it is 17.9 percent this year. In Schleswig-Holstein, Thuringia and Baden-Württemberg in particular, the opportunities for part-time studies have been significantly expanded. The Saarland is the leader with a share of 64.7 percent, while Bremen brings up the rear with only 2 percent part-time quota in the total offer.
The CHE has been monitoring the development of the supply and demand for part-time courses since 2016. The basis for this is the Higher Education Compass of the German Rectors’ Conference and data from the Federal Statistical Office.
