Munich (dpa / lby) – In Bavaria, special investigators have again become more active in cases of child pornography and child abuse than in previous years. By mid-October, the Center for Combating Child Pornography and Sexual Abuse of Children on the Internet (ZKI) had opened a total of 4,037 cases, Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich (CSU) said on Wednesday at a press conference in the Munich Palace of Justice. Last year there were 3236 procedures – in 2020 only 1122.

According to the ministry, the police recorded almost 40,000 cases of distribution, possession, acquisition and production of child pornography nationwide in 2021. This is more than five times as many as in 2017.

Since October 2020, the ZKI has been working as a special unit for particularly complex cases under the umbrella of the Central Office for Cybercrime Bavaria (ZCB) at the Bamberg Public Prosecutor’s Office.
