Perhaps the triumph in the DFB Cup was still in the bones of the Darmstadt team. Because against Holstein Kiel it takes until the second half before the lilies get going. Meanwhile, the goalkeeper from Hansa Rostock experienced a pitch-black day against Kaiserslautern.
Table leaders SV Darmstadt 98 allowed themselves to lose a point in the 2nd Bundesliga three days after their cup coup. In front of 14,650 spectators at the Böllenfalltor, the Lilien came to a 1-1 (0-1) win against Holstein Kiel. Steven Skrzybski (35th minute) gave the guests the lead, Matthias Bader equalized (72nd). Darmstadt avoided defeat with an attack in the second half and are now unbeaten in 14 games.
Coach Torsten Lieberknecht’s team knocked out Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 in the second round of the DFB Cup on Tuesday. Darmstadt put in a weak first half against Kiel. At 0: 1, however, video evidence was needed to clarify whether Skrzybski had been offside.
Darmstadt also suffered from the loss of a few aces, including cup winning goalscorer Aaron Seydel, but really put the pressure on after the break. Patric Pfeiffer (51st) and Braydon Manu (62nd) both missed chances with a header. When equalizing, Bader scored from an acute angle through the legs of goalkeeper Thomas Dähne. Newcomer and striker Keanan Bennets (most recently Borussia Mönchengladbach), whose commitment the southern Hesse had announced shortly before the game, was not used. Kiel’s Simon Lorenz had to be treated for a long time in stoppage time after injuring his head in a collision.
A curious goalkeeping mistake by Markus Kolke and a double goal gave 1. FC Kaiserslautern their fourth win of the season. With his six and seven goals of the season, Terrence Boyd (67th/82nd) ??ensured the 2-0 (1-0) win at FC Hansa Rostock. In front of more than 20,000 spectators, Hansa keeper Markus Kolke let the ball slip through his legs at FCK’s opening goal and initiated Hansa’s fourth home defeat. The climber from the Palatinate is still unbeaten abroad.
Hansa’s energetic start fizzled out quickly. The Lauterer positioned themselves better, were compact and even had the most promising opportunities of the uneventful first half. However, striker Kenny Prince Redondo failed twice within a few seconds at the brilliantly reacting Kolke (31st).
Even after the restart, the goal-threatening excitement remained very manageable. Kolke had to deflect a direct shot from Lautern’s right-back Erik Durm over the bar after a good hour and then made the nasty mistake: the Hansa goalkeeper let a solid header from Boyd slip through his legs and into the goal. Hansa did not find an answer to the unfortunate deficit even after a change of personnel. On the contrary, Boyd made the decision for the Palatinate with his second goal.
