Jena (dpa/th) – A sex offender from Weimar who had gone into hiding in Hungary in the meantime is now in custody in Thuringia. This was announced by the state police in Jena on Thursday. The 61-year-old man had previously been sentenced to four years and seven months in prison by the Erfurt Regional Court for serious sexual abuse of children. He did not present himself when he was due to start his sentence, so the public prosecutor’s office in Erfurt issued an arrest warrant. The Jena investigators soon discovered that he had fled to Hungary.
Thanks to close cooperation between the Thuringian State Criminal Police Office and the Hungarian authorities, it was possible to track down the suspect on Lake Balaton and arrest him in mid-May. According to the police, he then tried to take legal action against his extradition. An illness during his detention further delayed the transfer to Germany. He has been serving his sentence in a correctional facility in Thuringia since last week.
