Money is becoming tighter for many families in view of the current price development. This puts the issue of poverty back on the agenda.
Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Welfare organizations in Baden-Württemberg are demanding significantly more commitment from the state government in the fight against poverty. In view of the rising energy prices, quick help is required, said the spokesman for the League of Free Welfare, Michael Karmann, which includes Caritas, DRK and Diakonie. “We assume that households with up to 4,000 euros gross will have significant difficulties making additional payments that are in the four-digit range.”
According to an evaluation by the State Statistical Office, almost a quarter (23.8 percent) of households in the southwest fall into the low-income group. That’s more than 2.6 million people – including around 573,000 children and young people. With the nationwide action week “Poverty threatens everyone”, the state poverty conference wants to draw more attention to the topic from Monday.
