The Minister Delegate for Local Authorities to the Minister of the Interior, Dominique Faure, mentioned in an interview published Friday, August 18 by the newspapers of the Ebra group, an “evolution” of the mayors’ allowance in order to bring it ” live up to” their “commitment” and fight against their “discouragement”.
“The compensation paid to elected officials is not sufficient for a number of mayors who are forced to work in parallel. Nothing is simple when you are mayor today and there is a form of discouragement, ”acknowledges the minister.
As announced to Agence France-Presse in July, Ms. Faure confirms that she is carrying out “a vast project to improve the conditions for exercising the mandate of local elected representative” in collaboration with David Lisnard, president of the Association of Mayors of France. The minister mentions in particular a revaluation for the elected representatives of municipalities with 3,500 to 100,000 inhabitants, whose maximum compensation varies from 2,200 euros to 4,400 euros gross per month, depending on the size of the communities.
The remuneration of mayors of cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants will also be discussed, because “they are full-time elected officials who have heavy responsibilities and manage a staff of several thousand people”, she justifies. If the Minister does not specify the levels of revaluation envisaged, she rules out the possibility of a personalized allowance intended to offset a loss of income linked to taking office as an elected official. “People are paid very well in the private sector and there is no reason to compensate their previous salary,” she said. According to a Senate report released last July, more than 1,000 mayors elected in 2020, out of about 35,000, had resigned mid-term.
