Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – The corona infection process is picking up speed in Saxony-Anhalt. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) registered 793.9 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the country for the past seven days, as the RKI dashboard showed on Thursday. A week earlier, the incidence was 385.2. Nationwide, the seven-day incidence on Thursday was 793.8. However, this information only provides a very incomplete picture of the number of infections.
Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.
Within Saxony-Anhalt, the registered incidence of infection differs significantly. According to the RKI, the seven-day incidence in the Jerichower Land district was 1042.4 on Thursday and 1022.5 in Mansfeld-Südharz. In the district of Wittenberg, on the other hand, the lowest value in the country was found with 582.1 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week.
According to the RKI, 872,214 infections have been registered nationwide since the beginning of the pandemic. The statistics show a total of 5773 deaths in connection with a corona infection in the country. Saxony-Anhalt has around 2.17 million inhabitants.
According to the RKI, 74 percent of the residents in Saxony-Anhalt have basic immunization against the virus. 58 percent received the first booster vaccination and seven percent received the second booster vaccination.
Meanwhile, the number of Covid 19 patients in the intensive care units in Saxony-Anhalt is increasing. The “Magdeburger Volksstimme” reported, citing the State Office for Consumer Protection, that 46 people infected with corona were treated in the intensive care units on Wednesday morning, a week earlier there were 28. On Thursday the number of cases was 49, according to the Divi intensive care register. 15 patients had to be ventilated. A spokesman for the Ministry of Health told the “Magdeburger Volksstimme”: “There are currently no signs of the health system being overloaded.”
