Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – The number of first-semester students fell again in the 2021/22 winter semester. Only 54,400 young people began studying at Baden-Württemberg’s universities, as the State Statistical Office announced on Thursday in Stuttgart. That is a good 4 percent less than a year earlier. The proportion of women was again slightly over 50 percent. A total of almost 354,700 young people were enrolled, 49 percent of whom were women.

After the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the number of foreign first-year students in particular fell sharply in the 2020/21 winter semester, falling by 28 percent. In the case of the German freshmen, the drop was initially lower at 2 percent. It was not until the 2021/22 winter semester that the number of German first-year students dropped significantly, with a drop of 9 percent.
