“One hundred and one lives have now been lost” in the fires ravaging Hawaii, said Hawaii Governor Josh Green on Tuesday (August 15). A report made public during a televised address, stating that the emergency services have now searched a little more than a quarter of the search area they must cover. This fire is the deadliest in more than a century in the United States.

The town of Lahaina, on the west coast of Maui, was almost entirely engulfed in flames. On the spot, thousands of buildings are destroyed and many have been reduced to a simple pile of greyish ashes.

The former capital of the kingdom of Hawaii, which had 12,000 inhabitants, now has its dead and the authorities have already warned that the human toll could still increase considerably over the next few days.

Relatives of missing persons are encouraged to take a DNA test to help identify the corpses, which are often unrecognizable.
