Several districts of Paris are affected by the triathlon and paratriathlon preparation events for the 2024 Olympic Games. The disruptions began this Wednesday, August 16, and will last until Sunday, August 20, as Le Parisien explains.
On the program during these five days: perimeters and traffic restrictions, particularly in the 7th and 8th arrondissements. From this Wednesday morning, traffic was prohibited between the Alexandre-III and Alma bridges. Around the quays, the Esplanade des Invalides and part of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées have also been closed to cars.
Restrictions continue until 8 p.m. in a smaller area. Only cyclists, pedestrians and residents are free to move, subject to presenting proof of address. This device allowed triathletes to jump into the water, in the Seine, from this Wednesday.
That’s it, the athletes are in the water! Under the Alexandre III bridge, the triathletes were able to train this morning in the Seine. The accomplishment of a huge job, thanks to @Prefet75_IDF, @Paris and all the actors involved. See you tomorrow morning for the start of the competitions! pic.twitter.com/fcGD2ig8cO
Regarding public transport, the police headquarters warned on August 1 that “certain accesses” to the metro “could be closed” from August 16 to 20, if the metros are operating normally. Some bus lines will also be subject to diversions, listed on the RATP website.
For the days of Thursday 17 and Friday 18 August, the disruptions will be greater due to the start of the test competition. Two perimeters between the avenue des Champs-Élysées, the place de la Concorde and the Tuileries gardens will be prohibited to traffic and parking throughout the day, from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Finally, on August 19 and 20, the traffic delimitation will be similar from 2 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the afternoon, restrictions will be limited to the Esplanade des Invalides and along Cours Albert-Ier.

At the same time as the triathlon and the paratriathlon, the archery preparation event will be held on Saturday and Sunday but will have no impact on traffic in the capital. Security measures will still be in place.
The “Test Event” is the first organizational challenge for the authorities, one year before the opening of the official competition. The open water swimming competition in the Seine, originally scheduled for August 5 and 6, had been canceled due to the poor bacteriological quality of the water in the Seine.
