Germany celebrates 32 years of reunification. In Saxony-Anhalt, too, the historic act is commemorated with festivals and events. The focus is on those places that are symbols of unity today.
Marienborn/Halle (dpa/sa) – Several thousand people across the country celebrated the Day of German Unity in Saxony-Anhalt. For example, around 5,000 visitors took part in guided tours of the extensive grounds of the former largest German-German border crossing at the Marienborn German Division Memorial on the A2 after a prayer service on the subject of “peace”, said memorial director Susan Frisch on Monday of the German Press Agency .
Part of the celebration was the opening of the exhibition “Germany About Yesterday” with photographs by Dario Laganá, it said. There were also eyewitness talks, music and a children’s program. According to the information, around 25 participants took part in the bike tour offered by the memorial along the former inner-German border.
The border monument in Hötensleben in the Börde district was also a starting point for those interested in history and day trippers, where three guided tours were on the program. According to the Böckwitz/Zicherie Border Museum, its festival program had the motto “Together | Grow” and filled it with a border hike, bike tour, photo presentation and church service. Böckwitz belongs to Saxony-Anhalt, Zicherie to Lower Saxony. During the division of Germany, the border ran through the middle of the double village.
The Brocken, which was foggy and stormy on German Unity Day, was the destination of a star hike organized by the Harz Club. Despite the bad weather, several hundred hikers scaled the 1,141-meter-high summit, which for many, according to the Harz Club, is the symbol of German unity. There were also commemorations and events on Monday in Halle, Magdeburg and Naumburg.
