Dresden (dpa / sn) – Young people shortly before confirmation from parishes of the Evangelical State Church go to the bakeries in autumn. In the period leading up to the first Advent, they knead dough under professional guidance as part of the nationwide “5,000 loaves” campaign, which refers to the biblical story of the feeding of the 5,000, as the regional church office in Dresden announced at the start on Thursday. The confirmands were given an insight into the craft. They also learned to appreciate food more.
“It is something different to have the haptic experience of kneading the dough and hearing from the baker that sourdough rests for a long time,” said Bishop Tobias Bilz. The difference to the industrial product, which is quickly thrown away, becomes clear. And the young people themselves made sure that the loaves of bread were sold, for example at church services or community festivals.
In preparation for confirmation, the young people also dealt with justice and the everyday life of their peers in other parts of the world. This year’s proceeds from their work go to youth education projects in Malawi, Myanmar and Paraguay. Most recently, in 2018, a few hundred confirmands from more than 40 parishes registered and “generated” around 10,500 euros.
