Plauen (dpa/sn) – Organized under the name “Forum for Democracy and Freedom”, more than 4,000 people demonstrated in Plauen (Vogtlandkreis) on Sunday because of German politics in the energy crisis. “The event was peaceful, the demonstrators were cooperative and adhered to the tightened requirements,” said a spokesman for the district office of the German Press Agency on Sunday. However, it will also be checked whether proceedings for administrative offenses should be initiated against some of the around 4250 participants.
Among other things, the participants criticized the federal government for its policy in the energy crisis caused by the Ukraine war and the US troop presence in Germany. According to the district office, flags of the Free Saxony party, which is assigned to the right-wing extremist spectrum, were also shown. The association last called for rallies in Plauen on September 11th.
In the run-up to the demonstrations, Plauen’s Lord Mayor Steffen Zenner (CDU) had expressed understanding for demonstrating citizens. “We have a completely new quality of worries, needs and fears in our citizenship,” he told the German Press Agency. It is right that the citizens also take them to the streets. In his opinion, however, the “Forum for Democracy and Freedom” is not “based on our basic understanding of democracy”.
