The original R5 Turbo from the 1970s is one of the most radical and craziest sports cars of all time. With the electric new edition as the R5 Turbo 3E, Renault wants to do justice to the icon for its 50th birthday with a special drift technique.
Renault is celebrating the 50th birthday of the Renault 5 Turbo with an electric homage. At the same time, the French car manufacturer is giving another glimpse of the modernized comeback of the small car series as an electric car. However, it comes with a moderate design and a more modest drive.
The R5 Turbo 3E study adopts the thick cheeks, the wide hips with the typical air intakes and the large rear wing from the original from the 1970s. Likewise the bonnet and the doors. Inside there are checkered seats and a classic instrument layout, but no longer analog, but as a digital screen. Other modern elements include a carbon fiber body, colored LED strips at the rear and headlights made of LED modules. What looks like an air intake on the bonnet actually houses the charging socket for the electric drive’s traction battery.
Two 280 kW/380 hp electric drives are located on the rear wheels of the study, which enable a top speed of 200 km/h and accelerate the four-metre-long small car to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Distinctive drifting abilities should also ensure driving fun; the electronically controlled transverse driving is initiated via an upright handbrake lever, supported by a maximum steering angle of 50 degrees.
