The Russian Minister of Defense claimed, this Saturday, August 12, to have hijacked an attempted attack by twenty Ukrainian drones targeting the occupied Crimean peninsula. “Tonight (Friday-Saturday), the Kyiv regime’s attempted terrorist attack by twenty drones against targets on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula was foiled,” reads the Russian ministry’s Telegram.
Fourteen Ukrainian drones were destroyed by air defense systems and another six by electronic warfare means, he said. The attack caused no casualties and caused no damage, the defense ministry added. The Russian army announced on Friday that it had destroyed a Ukrainian drone in western Moscow, against the backdrop of an increase in such attacks targeting the Russian capital.
“The drone was neutralized by electronic warfare means and crashed in a forest area west of Moscow,” the Russian Defense Ministry said on Telegram, blaming “the Kiev regime.” The Russian military clarified that the drone was aimed at “an installation on the territory of Moscow”, without giving details of the potential target of the device.
The mayor of Moscow had earlier said the drone had crashed “without causing significant damage” in a forest park on the banks of the Moskva River, which runs through the Russian capital. In late July and early August, drones were shot down over the business district of Moscow, in the west of the Russian capital, causing slight damage to the facade of two towers. In May, two drones were shot down over the Kremlin.
