Already worrying: Another type of ice cream from Häagen-Dazs is suspected of containing traces of 2-chloroethanol. Because the compound can cause cancer, the manufacturer General Mills is now recalling the Favorite Selection. The group sounded the alarm as early as August.
The US food company General Mills recalls another Häagen-Dazs ice cream. This time it’s the Häagen Dazs Favorite Selection (4×95 ml), with the expiry dates from March 4th, 2023 to April 29th, 2023, as reported by the portal of the federal states and the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (“lebensmittelnning.de”).
Accordingly, it cannot be ruled out that this type of ice cream also contains traces of 2-chloroethanol (2CE). According to the manufacturer, 2-chloroethanol can be linked to the presence of the plant protection product ethylene oxide, which could cause cancer. Ethylene oxide is a colorless gas and is used to spray food to kill fungus or bacteria. It is carcinogenic and mutagenic. The use of ethylene oxide has been banned in Germany since 1981 and throughout the EU since 1991.
Anyone who bought the affected Häagen Dazs Favorite Selection can return the product to the supermarket, just like the previously affected varieties. The purchase price will then be refunded. The company emphasizes that all recalls are a precautionary measure. Already in the summer there were recall campaigns for Häagen-Dazs varieties: In August these were:
