Niederrieden (dpa / lby) – According to the police, a fire in a warehouse near Niederrieden caused damage of around 500,000 euros. A passer-by initially noticed a smoke development on Wednesday afternoon, the officials said in the evening. A short time later, the hall in the Unterallgäu district was reportedly in full fire.

In order to be able to extinguish the fire, the agricultural hall was demolished with the help of two excavators, the police said. The extinguishing work continued into the evening and should continue throughout the night, as a spokesman said when asked by the dpa. The building contained several hundred bales of straw and hay, which were spread out in a nearby field. There are still embers in the hay and straw bales, which are constantly rekindled by the wind.

A total of around 150 emergency services from the local fire brigade, the technical relief organization and the rescue service were deployed. The Memmingen criminal police have taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire.
