US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Friday, August 11, the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the son of US President Joe Biden, Hunter, accused of tax evasion by the courts and of dubious foreign affairs by the Republican opposition. The news comes as his father formalized his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election at the end of April.
David Weiss, a federal prosecutor, was already investigating “allegations of criminal conduct by, among others, Robert Hunter Biden,” Garland said in brief remarks. The minister said Mr. Weiss told him on Tuesday that he believed he had reached a point in his investigation that required him to be appointed as a special prosecutor.
“He asked to be named. After considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances surrounding this subject, I have concluded that it is in the general interest to appoint him as a special prosecutor, ”continued the Minister of Justice, without giving further details.
Hunter Biden, 53, is accused of tax evasion and acquiring a firearm while a drug addict. He has been targeted for years by ex-President Donald Trump and Republicans, who accuse him of corruption and claim that the Justice Department is trying at all costs to avoid a prison sentence for the son of the current president.
