The holidays are over. Now it’s time to go back to school. This time without a mask and tests. Numerous Ukrainian refugee children will also be taught in the southwest in the future.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – After six weeks of summer vacation, school starts again for around 1.5 million young people on Monday. The new school year will begin “without a mask, without tests”, assured Minister of Education Theresia Schopper (Greens) in advance. The number of vaccinated children and young people has increased significantly, and the vaccination rate is also high in the teaching staff.

According to the State Statistical Office, the first day of school is announced for around 103,500 schoolchildren this week. Most of them (97,400) start at a primary school, another 4,200 children are enrolled at a special education and counseling center. The free Waldorf schools are expecting around 1,900 new children at their facilities.

Several hundred teaching positions are still vacant. There is one special feature this school year: Schopper expects more than the around 30,000 refugee children and young people from Ukraine who were expected to attend classes in Baden-Württemberg. There are also young refugees from other countries. In some places, the school capacity limits would be reached, Schopper warned.
