Blankenburg (dpa/sa) – The rescue of the large Blankenburg Castle above the city is progressing. The German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) has supported the construction work over the past ten years with around 300,000 euros, as a spokesman said. With a final acceptance date on Thursday, the construction work was declared to be over. The 900-year-old Great Castle consists of medieval castle remains, Renaissance additions and a Baroque redesign as a Guelph princely residence. A baroque park stretches below the palace.
In GDR times, the castle served as a convalescent home and as a technical school. According to the DSD, this was followed by vacancies, vandalism and false speculation. The castle fell into disrepair, due to the leaking roof there was a strong infestation of dry rot and further damage. Since 2007, the castle has belonged to the specially founded non-profit Großes Schloss Blankenburg GmbH. Among other things, the 4500 square meter roof could be re-covered. The German Foundation for Monument Protection, together with the association for the rescue of Blankenburg Castle and the gGmbH, is calling for further donations.
