Munich (dpa / lby) – The state office of the Bavarian Greens has become the victim of a fraudster. The police arrested a 25-year-old suspect in Cologne. The police in Munich announced on Thursday that large parts of the stolen sum of money had been secured from him. According to their own statements, the Greens filed a criminal complaint on August 11, and by August 16 large parts of the amount of several thousand euros had been secured again.
According to the police, the fraudster had used the so-called CEO fraud scam. Typically, crooks collect information about a company and then send a bogus email to an employee, posing as their boss, and asking for a sum of money to be transferred to a specific account. In order to dispel doubts among those affected, emotional pressure and time pressure are often built up.
The Greens said the fraud was noticed during an account review. The internal control and IT security system of the state office has been extensively checked. The employees would now be further trained with regard to cyber crime.
