A fire breaks out on a ferry between Gotland and Götska. Hundreds of passengers are on board. The authorities send helicopters and order other ships into the region. The affected ship radios that the situation is under control.
A fire broke out on a passenger ferry off the Swedish coast with around 300 people on board. “We have been informed of a limited fire and the firefighting is ongoing,” a spokesman for the ferry company Stena Line told Swedish radio.
A spokeswoman for the Swedish sea rescue center told the TT news agency that there were no reports of injuries. “We have received information from the ship that the fire is said to be under control. But we have alerted all available units to be on site should an evacuation be necessary.” All available pilot boats and helicopters were sent to the ferry.
The ferry is said to be near the small Swedish island of Gotska Sandön, north of Gotland. The fire is said to have broken out in a refrigerated container on the car deck. There is smoke but no open flames.
