Schwerin (dpa/mv) – On the last weekend of the 9-euro ticket, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Minister of Transport Reinhard Meyer (SPD) drew a positive balance. “The model of the 9-euro ticket has largely proven itself in the three months. It has relieved the citizens,” said Meyer. In addition, the ticket is a contribution to the mobility revolution and to climate protection. A nationwide valid public transport ticket is needed as a follow-up solution. However, this depends heavily on the participation of the federal government. “It’s a challenge,” said the minister. The current cheap offer ends on Wednesday.

However, the 9-euro ticket also revealed the weaknesses of local public transport, said Meyer. In the holiday regions of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for example, the capacities were not sufficient at times. Added to this were staff shortages due to the Omikron summer wave. There were sometimes mercilessly overcrowded buses and trains. Meyer had pointed out this danger in advance of the ticket. The country has booked additional services on some routes to mitigate peaks. In return, the railways canceled individual trains on other local transport routes in MV for weeks, which led to resentment among commuters there.
