Leipzig (dpa / sn) – After a shootout on Eisenbahnstraße in Leipzig, an arrest warrant was issued against a suspect. The accusation is attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm, as spokesman for the Leipzig public prosecutor’s office Ricardo Schulz said on Monday on request. During the argument on Saturday evening, a 32-year-old suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, his life is not in danger.

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested a little later. The spokesman declined to provide any further details. The investigations into the background are ongoing.

Eisenbahnstraße is a crime hotspot in Leipzig. The first and so far only weapon ban zone in Saxony was set up there in November 2018. Certain weapons may not be carried in the area, which is around 70 football pitches in size, and the police are allowed to carry out checks regardless of suspicion. The zone should be lifted soon.

According to a study published by the University of Leipzig last year, the zone had little impact on general crime, but since then there have largely been no serious conflicts. The majority of residents had also wished for preventive measures against open drug trafficking, littering and traffic hooliganism. In addition to an increased police presence in the form of pedestrian and bicycle lanes, there are plans to set up a permanent police station in the area.
