The position of Rostock’s mayor has been vacant since June, because ex-town hall boss Madsen is now a minister in Kiel. The election date is set, the field of applicants is forming.

Rostock (dpa/mv) – A good three months before the mayoral elections in Rostock, several parties have already officially announced their candidates, and others are about to jump. Applicants for the most important post in the town hall of the largest city in the north-east can register until 4:00 p.m. on August 30. The election will take place in mid-November.

The green-left spectrum relies on women. Bündnis90/Die Grünen nominated Claudia Müller, Member of Parliament and Federal Government Coordinator for Maritime Economy and Tourism, as a candidate. The SPD sends the head of the state building and real estate agency, Carmen-Alina Botezatu, into the race.

The district association of the left will only make a final decision on Monday evening. However, Eva-Maria Kröger, member of the state parliament, who is also the leader of her party in the Rostock citizenship, should be nominated. The board of the Left spoke out in favor of them last Thursday. Rostock’s Social and Health Senator Steffen Bockhahn had also signaled his interest.

Almost at the same time as the left, the mayor election, including personal details, is on the agenda for the FDP and the CDU on Monday evening. The board of the Rostock FDP district association advises on its recommendation for an applicant. The CDU district board also meets on the subject.

The Liberals emphasized that the FDP and CDU were holding open-ended talks with possible candidates. Names are circulating. The director of the State Police Office, Michael Ebert, is under discussion as a possible candidate from the CDU and FDP. The former Rostock police chief signaled that he was aiming for the top post in the town hall, but kept the ball flat.

“The political parties and the citizens of the Hanseatic city of Rostock have to decide whether I am a suitable candidate for this responsible post,” he told NDR. The FDP district association will finally decide on the nomination of a candidate at a small party conference on August 19. The date is still open for the CDU.

However, the election date of November 13 is certain. Should a runoff election become necessary, this is scheduled for November 27th. The election was necessary because the previous incumbent, Claus Ruhe Madsen, moved to Schleswig-Holstein as Economics Minister in June in the cabinet of Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU).
