Typhoon Doksuri swept through southeastern China on Friday with heavy rain and gusts of up to 175 km/h, after killing 13 people in the Philippines.
The storm, which has lost intensity in recent hours, hit the Chinese coast around 09:55 local time (01:55 GMT), in the province of Fujian which faces Taiwan, according to national television.
A red alert, the highest level of weather in China, is in effect there.
The CCTV channel showed one of its journalists on the spot surrounded by flooded streets and trees strewn on the ground.
Images shared on social networks reveal huge gusts of wind sweeping through residential areas on the outskirts of Quanzhou (southeast).
Others show residents trying to take shelter, while huge waves hit the shoreline.
The manufacturing province of Guangdong, which counts Canton as its capital, as well as those of Fujian and Zhejiang, bordering Shanghai, are the areas most exposed to the winds.
In Fujian, more than 400,000 people were evacuated as a precaution, reported the new China news agency.
Schools, factories and businesses are also closed, the agency said.
Typhoon Doksuri will continue its trajectory further north on Saturday and will decrease further in intensity, according to the meteorological services.
Doksuri struck the northern Philippines on Wednesday, where the toll rose to 13 dead and 21 missing, local authorities said Friday.
