Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) – Heat-related failures of elevators on the new Karlsruhe subway should soon be fixed. Two components are each affected, said a spokeswoman for the Karlsruhe Transport Association KVV on Friday. These are installed in the upper parts of the glass elevator shafts and signal the control center at temperatures from around 32 degrees that it is too hot for the technology. A control center employee can then switch off the elevators if there are no longer any people in them.

One of the components had already been installed further down the shaft in the past few weeks, the spokeswoman said. “That didn’t lead to success.” Further renovations are to follow.

All passenger elevators at the Marktplatz, Europaplatz and Kronenplatz stops are potentially affected. The stand in the blazing sun, explained the KVV spokeswoman. When the temperatures allow it – especially in the morning and later in the evening – they are in operation. The lifts affected are the most used. In the event of future failures, employees should always be on site, for example to help wheelchair users or people with prams or walkers.

The Karlsruhe subway only went into operation in December. The spokeswoman explained that nothing was known about the possible heat problems. “Otherwise it wouldn’t have been built like this.”
